Welcome to SoccerTactics.com

This site and the manuals outline how to coach the 'Passing Game' of Arsenal, Manchester United and Barcelona.  This is all based on extensive research and quotes from top coaches like Arsene Wenger.

Soccertactics.com is about the reasons we are involved in the game, enjoyment, creativity and flair.

About the Coaching Soccer Tactics manual

The starting point for any coach is to make a decision about the type of game, style and tactics you want to promote. The manual begins by comparing the tactics, players and coaching atmosphere used by 2 opposite styles of play. The Long Ball Percentage Game and The Passing Game.

It then outlines the tactics and coaching atmosphere you need to play a Passing Game and be successful against Long Ball teams. This includes

  • 20 key defensive and attacking tactics. Game examples and drills
  • 20 Coaching Methods to teach these tactics
  • 50 quotes from top coaches with Arsene Wenger extensively used throughout
  • 50 key facts about the game and successful teams
  • 30 Activities for coaches and players to develop game understanding
  • 4 Simple and effective criteria to apply to analyse players decisions when they have the ball
  • 3 areas you must consider to ensure players enjoy the game (based on extensive research). This will requires a significant shift in the traditional way soccer has been coached!
  • 6 top coaches consider five key areas of the game. Wenger, Fergusson, Guardiola (Barcelona), Mourinho, Clough, Gradi, Michels (Ajax)
  • 1 week in the life of a profesional football club

All of this will help you understand the game. If coaches and players understand the game they are better able to make decisions in the game and analyse their own performance!

PROBLEM SOLUTION PRACTICE (PSP System) ACTIVITY book on Soccer Tactics (June 2011) helps players make better decisions in the game by

  • PROBLEM- setting them tactical problems to solve
  • SOLUTION- showing a solution
  • PRACTICE- expalining how players can practice this solution

Problems are set in all these areas.

  • 8 passing tactics
  • 5 key defensive tactics
  • 8 building tactics
  • 7 delivering tactics

These tactics cover what players should do when they have the ball and when they are defending.

Football is 95% movement without the ball so if players can work out where to position themselves they can make better decisions in games and begin to anlyse their own and the teams performance.

BUT why do we need to look for new coaching methods? Why do players benefit from understanding the game?

Traditional coaching methods and the 'Long Ball Percentage Style' have failed to develop players. However, this style of play still dominates youth, and much adult, football today (see research in manual). There are three reasons for this.

Firstly, the experience of many coaches was of traditional coaching methods and the Long Ball Percentage style of football!! Many replicate this with the players they coach. We have to question the value of this expereince and look at reasearch and new methods?

Secondly, this Long Ball Style is heavily reliant on the opposition making mistakes and so in the short term, in particular with young players, can get results. Hence its appeal. However, playing this way limits decisions, technique, movement, flair and creativity. Perhaps more damaging than anything is the coaching atmosphere which is one where too often players fear mistakes. It therefore fails to fully develop players and fails to be as enjoyable an experience for players, coaches and spectators (usually parents) alike.

Thirdly, Coaching the Long Ball Percentage Style has the attraction of being realtively 'easy' as Brian Clough said any idiot can teach players to kick the ball as far as they can and chase after it. Coaching the Passing Game is not quick or easy, but it is worth it

As a coach if you are serious about players enjoying the game and improving you need to try to develop intelligent soccer players not athletes who play football!

Hi Phil, Just an update. WE WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP!!! Thanks for you help. 7 years and finally my son won. The kids played a great tactical game against a far more superior team. We dominated the game and had control of the ball for 80% of the game, even though we only won 1 -0. Thanks again for your help from the Coaching Manual and the emailed questions you replied to. I'll keep in touch.

Phil, just a word of thanks for the soccer coaching manual, I am involved with coaching a regional rep senior team in the Northern league in NZ. I coach the reserve side so as you can imagine we have had a large number of players through our sessions this season. I started the season with basic tactical awareness, measuring our performance and, as much as possible, the oppositions. At the half way mark we had 13 points on the table (of a possible 30) and had won a couple of great cup games. The second half of the season has gone slightly better. We have 34 points with 3 games to go. Increased tactical awareness has enabled our team of largely teen players to out play larger, older and technically generally better teams. I very much appreciate your input. Many thanks.

I have a read thru your coaching manual most evenings after work to try to absorb the drills and coaching questions to pass on to my players. I came across the manual after becoming fed up of searching local bookshops W.H.Smiths and the like and finding nothing of any use. I just looked on the net for Soccer Coaching and saw your two manuals. The one I bought seemed to fit the bill .I look at the game much deeper now...My wife claimed "Your obsessed with tactics". "You ought to take that book to bed with you" so I do. Cheers

I realised I hadn't got a clue about the tactical side of the game. I know use the ideas you introduce and can analyse any situation.
